Beyond the heritage façade of this worker’s cottage, a light-filled extension contains the new kitchen, dining and living room and is infused with colour to reflect the owner’s personality. The folded corrugated iron roof is a modern interpretation of the traditional awning over the front verandah, and the textural brick walls nod to the former brick quarries in Brunswick. The brickwork and natural timber doors also improve the thermal performance of the home.
Inside, the front bedroom is retained and a second bedroom added. Creating a more interesting journey through to the living space, an internal joinery block housing the kitchen cupboards and laundry gives nuance to the hallway. Where the living room wall steps in from the boundary, a full-height window frames a landscape view, drawing in light and a connection to the landscape.
The main living space is compact and open. Skylights over the kitchen bench bring light deep into the floor plan, and the integrated kitchen island and dining table offer a well-resolved and flexible use of space.
