Our renovation and extension of this 1920s home in Bayside centred on connections: between the old house and new addition; between the interior and landscape; and between multi-generational family members. We crafted the architecture and interiors to frame views of the garden and capture the sunlight as it moves throughout the day. The warm, textural natural palette with grey, blue and brown hues draws inspiration from the environment and feels effortless yet refined.
The two-storey rear extension houses the new primary suite upstairs, and the living and dining area downstairs. Bullnose edging around the first-floor windows softens the linear brickwork of the cantilevered façade and fine metal awning shades the ground floor and built-in seat. The locally sourced bricks add texture and detail and complement the heritage façade. Robust and low maintenance, they endure the sun and coastal weather and help regulate internal temperatures.
Faustina quartzite in the kitchen – situated between the old and new house – represents revival and transition. Travertine encases the fireplace in the living room, where extensive glazing offers beautiful views to the garden and swimming pool, and floods the room with winter sun.We carved out the staircase to sweep up over the dining room entry, providing a graceful arched frame. At the top of the stairs, a built-in window seat looks out the street and basks in the morning sun.
