From outside, the grand gable roof on this Federation house gives an impression of volume inside the house. Yet inside, the single-storey house lacks the space and loftiness the roof suggests – until now.
Celebrating the roof, we crowned the new rear extension with a 4.6-metre-high, timber-lined gable ceiling that finally allows the volume to be experienced.
Through a rigorous planning process, we designed an extension that marginally increases the original footprint of the house, while adding significantly more storage and liveable space. Varied ceiling heights enrich the atmosphere of different spaces as you move through the home: from the front heritage rooms and hallway, to the dining and living area beneath the high gable, to the kitchen where a flat ceiling has a more intimate sense of space.
The highly detailed spaces foster calm, effortless living. Window seats and joinery are integrated into the architecture, and the large, almost square kitchen island encourages socialising. A palette of high-quality, textural finishes are robust for family life and infuse the home with subtle, harmonious texture. Adding a pop of vibrant colour, the bathrooms, laundry, pantry and dining-area wall will be drenched in colour.
Connecting the clients with their surroundings, windows to each side of the fireplace capture key views of the garden and pool. A landscaped pergola between the living area and kitchen provides a vibrant green canopy over the outdoor dining area and filters sunlight through its leaves.
